The Geology and Natural History of White Colne

The Colne Valley, as we see it today, is the outcome of millions of years of natural evolution and thousands of years of intervention by man.

The visible geology of this part of Essex results from periods of glaciation and subsequent erosion of the glacial layers by the river Colne.  Our Natural Landscape takes a very brief look at the geological forces which shaped our environment.  More detail is given in The Geology of White Colne.

Our Natural History contains information on the most commonly found species present here.  In common with other rural areas, encroaching development and changing farming practices on the one hand, and greater awareness and more considerate management of our landscape on the other, have had significant impacts on our wildlife. Our impact on the landscape is considered in the People and Places section.
